This is the first of fifteen “psalms of ascent,” a collection of songs sung by Jewish pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem to celebrate the three major feasts each year. It is a harsh psalm, reminding them — and us — that we live in hostile territory surrounded by lies and violence. We are reminded also that we are on a journey into the presence of God, walking in the way of faith, and inviting others to join us as we go.
