Sunrise Community Church, originally Mill Woods Mennonite Brethren Church, was planted in the fall of 1978. In May of 1979, Sunrise held its Charter Sunday with 35 signators. In the early days the congregation met in the Satoo School gymnasium until 1981 when they moved to Dan Knott Junior High School. Construction on the present building began in June of 1982 and the first worship service was held in the building on December 5 of that same year. In 1994 the original building was expanded and four years later the church made the decision to rename itself Sunrise Community Church.
