Psalm 38:1-22
"Prayer for Salvation"

In this psalm we encounter the psalmist David suffering deeply.  His suffering is physical, psychological and social.  It is the result of both David’s sin before God as well as the sin of others, his friends who have abandoned him and his enemies who are "kicking him while he is down.”  In this prayer of David who, in the midst of his great suffering, cries out to God with faith rooted in His character as a God of mercy in whom alone salvation is found.  And as we pray with David, we discover that salvation comes through suffering — not ours but through the suffering of Jesus who suffered for us to bring us salvation.  May we all join David in waiting upon God for his gift of salvation.
