In this passage we watch, along with others, as Jesus breaths his last and dies on the cross. We witness their various responses to this death of one recognized to be innocent. It seems utterly tragic. But, even now in these dark moments, God’s redemptive plan is unfolding in unseen ways undetected by those who witnessed the death of Jesus. A way has been opened for intimacy with God. Death itself will be shown to be defeated. We stand, with those in our text, on the edge of a glorious new future.
