In this passage we join Jesus and his disciples on the Mount of Olives just as a crowd approaches to arrest Jesus. Darkness has fallen, it’s night already, but not only is it physically dark — darkness seems to reign in these moments. Everything is going wrong. Jesus is betrayed by one of the Twelve, the other disciples get things wrong, and a crowd has come armed and ready to arrest Jesus. Yet, if we look closely, we recognize that God is yet at work to accomplish his purposes.
