Just hours before he will go to the cross, Jesus warns his disciples about falling into the behaviours of the teachers of the law. These men, the religious experts of the day presiding over the religious life of the nation, have utterly lost their way. They are focused on their own status and have utterly lost sight of that about which God cares. They may look good but they are failing to be good. Like them, our only hope is the redemptive work of Jesus. Through faith in him we are made holy and then empowered by the gospel and the Spirit to live new lives.
