Immediately on the heals of the Zacchaeus story, Jesus shares a parable with those gathered around him in Jericho. What would have run through their minds? How would they have understood Jesus’ story? As we dive into the text we will hear Jesus’ call to each of us to faithfulness, but it is faithfulness to him as response to his self-giving love about to play out on a cross in Jerusalem, not faithfulness to earn or maintain our standing with him. He remains the one who had come to “seek and to save the lost,” a fact of which we must never lose sight.
