In this passage, Jesus challenges the system of value and status by which the world operates by demonstrating his love and care for those who are completely helpless and utterly dependent — infants. His actions demonstrate powerfully that God’s love for us is not based on our status but solely upon his gracious, compassionate love. Knowing this profoundly impacts our hearts but also the way in which we, in turn, relate to others of “low status” all around us. As Jesus’ followers, we learn to value and love those whom our world deems unimportant, thereby demonstrating the good news of Jesus to a lost and broken world.
