In this passage we encounter Jesus teaching his disciples and to that end he employs a parable that is quite strange. It is a story about a dishonest manager who gets fired for being wasteful but yet is “commended” by both his master and by Jesus before the passage is through. As we explore the text we will discover the way forward — both what is not being commended and what is — and we will find ourselves deeply challenged with regards to our understanding and use of worldly wealth. Jesus urges his disciples to act now in light of the future, to use money in the present with our eyes firmly fixed on his coming kingdom. May Jesus work in each one of us, to make us faithful.
