Far from being a set of unrelated events and teachings lumped together, the three paragraphs that we explore in this message are deeply inter-related. Jesus is reaching out to social and religious elites and he seeks to subversively challenge many of the norms of that day. Over against those norms, Jesus calls people to embrace new norms, norms of his kingdom — compassion, humility and generosity.
