In this passage we encounter a story in which Jesus does something, or more accurately, doesn’t do something, that astonishes his dinner host. That event precipitates a major rebuke of the religious leaders of Jesus’ day and continues to serve as a warning to us today. The Christian faith does not begin with a focus on externals but with the heart. As we focus on the inner life, our sinful hearts and need for rescue, God brings about his transformation of our lives, from the inside out.
