Questions about the identity of Jesus have remained nearly constant through Luke’s gospel thus far so it is not surprising that they continue here. A variety of opinions exist about who Jesus is, and though Peter’s confession correctly identifies Jesus, he and the other disciples still fail to grasp what it means that Jesus is “God’s Messiah.” For Jesus it will mean a cross that the Twelve certainly did not expect, but as they will discover, following Jesus will also mean a cross for them.
