In what looks, at first glance, like a text of little or no importance, we actually discover powerful, transforming truths. First, Jesus has come to do a new thing, to form a new people, the church, centred around him; and second, it is not an affinity group but rather is comprised of a rag-tag group of people who accept his call to follow and are united around Jesus. These two realities, when understood, will impact and transform our lives, encouraging us with the gospel and drawing us into Christ’s new community.
