Just before Luke begins to tell the story of Jesus’ ministry, he shares two things; about Jesus’ own baptism and his genealogy. At first glance these may seem unimportant but in truth, what they reveal is of tremendous importance. What we come to recognize is that Jesus, in his coming to earth as a man, has “joined” us and has “identified” himself with us. He willingly, knowingly, entered into the mess of our lives to do for us what we could never do. Through faith in him, we are rescued by Jesus, the true hero of everyone of our stories.
