In this passage Paul contends that there is nothing of greater worth than knowing Jesus Christ. In comparison to a personal relationship with Jesus, Paul counts everything else, things that he used to value, to be “garbage.” And it is his passion to know Jesus more and more, that fuels his life now, even as he anticipates the day when he will be in the presence of Christ at the end of time. God’s desire for each of us is that we, like Paul, would come to value knowing Christ above all else.
