In this second introductory message to our series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount we ask the question, “What is this?” What exactly is the Sermon on the Mount and how are we to approach it? How are we to understand it? In answering that question, we review some of the approaches taken throughout church history before focusing our attention on the crucial context of the sermon — Jesus’ announcement of good news! It is his announcement of good news that provides us with the vital foundation for all that Jesus will teach us within these three chapters.
