It’s easy to read this passage and focus on the symptom rather than the central issue. To be sure this text has implications for our giving to the Lord or tithing, but what is at the centre is the current state of the relationship between God and his people. He loves them and longs to bless them but they have turned away from him and are persisting in unfaithfulness to him. Because of God’s goodness and patience, he persists in inviting them to turn to him wholeheartedly, of which tithing will be evidence.
