In this passage, Paul’s focus shifts from the the past to the future. He anticipates that soon he will stand before Caesar, with his life in the balance. His words here give us a window into his heart — of his single-minded devotion to Jesus. If he is to go on living, he will live for the exaltation of Jesus, and if his life comes to an end, he will glory in being with Jesus. It’s a win-win no matter what. This affection for Christ shapes everything in Paul, in life and in death. May our hearts likewise be captured by the greatness of Christ that we too would exalt in Christ!
